The History of Jorns' Sugar Bush

Maple syrup making in the Jorns family is a bit historic. It had its beginnings when Grandfather Jorns came to this area, "Door County WI", in 1857. Grandfather was an old sea captain who sailed under the name Captain Harry Jones, and his schooner, "Jones Elizebeth", named after his mother, transported products of the land. During his wide range of travel, knowledge of syrup making was collected from the French and local Native Americans.

Grandfather passed away in 1896, he left his wooden pails, spouts and maple forest to his son, Ferdinad, Jr. Although father and grandfather tapped only a hundred or so trees , their work was very hard because of the equipment available in those early years. After a bad accident with the horses which resulted in a knee injury, Ferdinand Jr. passed the syrup making over to his youngest son, Roland.
